Herberg joined CSUF in 2000 and served as Chair of the Nursing program for five years, where she helped Nursing from a program that required majors to have completed an associate degree at community college prior to admission to a full, four-year bachelor of science degree with more than 700 majors. Prior to joining CSUF she spent 15 years as a nursing educator in Pakistan, Switzerland, Africa, Afghanistan, Nepal and Thailand. She was a consultant for numerous international programs, including the World Health Organization.

Former U.S. Army nurse from 1945 to 1950, served at Cal State Fullerton for 11 years, including six years as department chair. Prior to joining CSUF, she helped set up one of the first community mental health centers in the nation in Denver.
Her areas of research included humor and health care, a subject she discussed numerous times at professional organizations and nursing programs, as well as in her book, “Humor in the Health Professions.”

Wilma pursued her education in nursing, eventually receiving her M.S. from UCLA in 1964 and her Ed.D. from USC in 1975. Wilma's nursing career culminated at CSU Fullerton where she was Professor and Founding Chair of the Department of Nursing from 1974 to 1981. In 1980 the CSU Fullerton Nursing Faculty established the Wilma J. Traber Humanism Award to honor Wilma's outstanding contributions in the fields of Nursing and Education.
Wilma volunteered for many organizations, including the Orange County Marine Institute and the San Juan Capistrano Mission.
