Mobile Teams - Reaching High-Risk Communities with Vaccination and Testing
Project
Abstract: |
As COVID-19 became a global pandemic in 2020, Los Angeles County (LAC) residents were affected. Those who experienced negative social determinants of health were affected disproportionately in disease rate and severity. These individuals were also less vaccinated for COVID-19. In response to disparities in vaccination, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health created the Mobile Vaccine Team (MVT) in 2021. The MVT provides vaccines for COVID-19 and other illnesses, going to sites throughout LAC. LAC continued to experience high rates of communicable disease (CD), including sexually transmitted infections, with increases in marginalized groups. This project primarily aimed to evaluate the impact of the MVT in vaccinating high-risk groups over a two-and-a-half-month period in 2023. The secondary aim was to institute and track the utilization of CD testing. The MVT facilitator used the PARiHS model to guide the project, which was widely accepted by those offered testing. While successful in testing and vaccination, the team found challenges in reaching positive cases for aftercare and results. MVT will further evaluate the impact of the team, the number of patients that can be seen in high-risk groups, and the addition of a nurse practitioner to the MVT for real-time treatment and street medicine.
