A postoperative handoff is performed by anesthesia providers and post-anesthesia care unit nurses during the transfer of care. This process is a necessary aspect of the perioperative routine; however, it remains unstandardized. The literature review supports standardizing handoffs to prevent the exclusion of pertinent information and decrease patient harm. As a result, in this Doctor of Nursing Practice project, we aimed to develop an evidence-based standardized checklist that may be implemented in clinical practice during the transition of care from the operating room to the post-anesthesia care unit. The checklist was developed by collecting and appraising the evidence and included the most common handoff components found in the literature. In addition, adjustments were made after obtaining expert opinions. Further evidence-based practice projects are recommended next steps to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of the checklist in the clinical practice setting.
