Development and Implementation of an Educational Module on Situational Leadership During Intraoperative Crises
Project
Abstract:
Numerous studies have highlighted the importance of effective situational leadership for anesthesia providers during intraoperative crises that promotes quality care and safe patient outcomes. Literature from pilot aviation training emphasizes situational leadership, communication skills, and the use of crisis checklists to reduce human errors among aviation crises. These concepts have been adapted to highlight the role of the anesthesia provider as a leader during medical crises. However, a recent Delphi analysis has identified knowledge gaps in situational leadership among anesthesia providers. This doctoral project aims to effectively implement a video-based situational leadership educational module for anesthesia providers to improve crisis management leadership skills in the operating room throughout Southern California hospitals. The Iowa Model provided the supporting conceptual and evidence-based framework for this project. Anesthesia providers who originally participated in the Delphi analysis evaluated the completed the module and completed a post module survey indicating their level of agreement and support of the educational content.
