Development of a Cricothyrotomy Education and Training Module: A Delphi Analysis
Project
Abstract: |
Cricothyrotomy is categorized as a high acuity, low occurrence critical airway procedure. Because anesthesia providers infrequently perform this airway management technique, there may be some hesitation and uncertainty to begin the procedure, and they may not maintain the skills necessary to successfully complete it. Without frequent airway training, there is a significant decrease in skill performance, adherence to difficult airway algorithms, and timely decision-making during an airway crisis. With regular cricothyrotomy training, anesthesia providers can improve their confidence and adherence to the proper steps required to successfully perform a cricothyrotomy. A Delphi Analysis surveyed anesthesia providers within the Southern California Kaiser Permanente Region. After three Delphi rounds, consensus from anesthesia providers provided the outline for the design of a Cricothyrotomy Education and Training module. This online education and training module can be utilized to provide regular cricothyrotomy training to help maintain anesthesia provider’s skills if emergency front of the neck access is needed.
