Development of a Formalized Evidence-Based Mentorship Program for Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists
Project
Abstract:
The clinical and academic rigor of nurse anesthesia doctorate programs leads to increased physiological and psychological stress levels on student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) (Mesisca & Mainwarming, 2021). Prolonged exposure to stress harms physical and mental health: it could impact personal relationships, cause fatigue, gastrointestinal problems, and even depression or drug addiction (Bittinger et al., 2020). Additionally, chronic stress and burnout can translate into student attrition, job dissatisfaction, and lower employment retention rates after graduation (Chipas & McKenna, 2011). Compelling evidence suggests that several mentorship strategies, such as group and near-peer mentorship, successfully alleviate stress levels in SRNAs. Currently, Kaiser Permanente School of Anesthesia (KPSA) does not have a formalized mentorship program to address the stressors of students. The purpose of this project was to develop a formal mentorship program at KPSA to help reduce stress and improve mentorship satisfaction and effectiveness among SRNAs enrolled in KPSA. Using the Iowa Model Revised, the KPSA Mentorship Program was developed using evidence-based strategies from existing academic programs and recommendations from the KPSA 2024 cohort survey results. As an ongoing study, future investigation is warranted to evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of the presented evidence-based SRNA mentorship program.
